Maybe the most popular and influential music genre in the world, rock’ n’ roll has definitely marked the whole music life of the last century. The musical basis of rock’ n’ roll is rhythm and beat, and the lyrics only come second. Paradoxically, he rock ‘n’ roll musical instruments that make it so special are common and widely used in other music styles as well: the drum, the electric guitar (one bass and one rhythm), the drums and the keyboards when it be the case. But there were other rock’ n’ roll musical instruments that made history, though they may be a little bit out of picture at the moment.

It all goes back in the 1940s when the piano was the leading music instrument in rock’ n’ roll music that was starting to emerge just then. But, it was a special kind of piano, the so-called boogie woogie piano, that dominated the first era of rock. The 50s brought a new musical instrument leading the rock’ n’ roll beat: the saxophone. And it was only in the late 50s that the guitar started on the ascending path that has brought it where it is today in rock’ n’ roll. So far so good, but how did it actually start?

At the beginning of rock in its most primitive of forms, there were not the musical instruments rock’ n’ roll uses today. This style is said to have grown from some forms of African – American jazz and Gospel singing, which would explain the later influence of the saxophone in playing rock. It must have used voice, harmonica and drums at the beginning, developing new ways of expression, and laying the foundation for a cultural movement that would spread all over the world. Rock’ n’ roll, somehow brought one of the first kinds of international uniformity.

The piano and the saxophone are the starting point of rock’ n’ roll and the musical instruments that made it grow, but the highest point in the evolution of the genre was brought by the guitar, more precisely, the electric guitar. When you say rock’ n’ roll musical instruments, you mean guitars and drums, this is a piece of common basic knowledge, that has become part of mankind’s culture. In the ancient Rome music was not a profession, it was a pass time, a hobby and an art. Musicians existed because there were Romans that knew how the play the various instruments. Hence, preoccupation with music and the arts in general only points to the Romans’ degree of civilization. One of the common ancient Roman musical instruments was the lyre, is was usually made of a turtle shell combined with strings, the generated sound very similar to our present-day guitar.

Another appreciated ancient Roman musical instrument was the Kithara, the most widely used musical chord-instrument for  playing both popular and soft  music. If we compare it with the lyre we can say that the Kithara is larger, heavier and produces louder sounds. Yet, everybody loved kythara music in the street or in the palace. Together with the lyre, it produced such sweet music that it was said that the best players “could make it cry” .

The nowadays guitars evolved from the Roman Kithara and from the lute, and the guitar singers of our days enjoy pretty much  the same “glory” as the Kithara singers from the ancient Rome. Though it has come to be known as an ancient Roman musical instrument, it was imported from Greece, like many others elements of cultures. Kithara music was seen as a gift from the gods of music, and its creators made the best use of its chords.

So, we should thank the Greek for creating the most elaborated and complex Kitharas ever, and for making music what it is to day. Now let’s take a look at the more practical side of the ancient Roman musical instruments. The Roman army also used several instruments for helping the general coordinating the troops on the battle field. The Buccina, for instance, was a kind of horn used in the field for communicating the orders to the men in the ranks.

This ancient Roman musical instrument was huge. The Buccina’s dimensions were impressive, since it measured approximatively 3 m long and had the form of the G letter. Not only did it help with troop movement, but it also provided a impression of strength and trust in outcome of a battle. Two very well-preserved specimens were found at the ruins of Pompeii, so that we not have a clear idea of what it must have looked like.

Other ancient Roman musical instruments used in battle were the Cornu and the Tuba.  The former was used to encode the generals’ orders into auditive messages that were send as broadcast all over the battlefield. The latter was some kind of trumpet different from what we know today. The Tuba was produced around 500 BC and was imported from the Etruscans, it was similar in many ways with the Greek Salpinx. This ancient trumped was made of bronze and measured about four feet long.

The instruments that are used by parang bands across the world represent many cultures that form part of our heritage. American, European, and African are all visible in the modern parang ensemble.

 

We will look at some of the instruments that make up the parang ensemble below:

 

Bandol or Bandola - musical instruments of Mexico

 

The bandol or bandola has four double strings; two of the strings are made of metal, while the rest of the strings on this instrument are made from gut.

 

The Box Bass - musical instruments of Mexico

 

This instrument that originates in Trinidad provided most of the bass that accompanies a parang. The instrument is a square rectangular box, which is about twenty inches high. The instrument has a hole in the centre that is around 6 inches in diameter.  A pole that is detachable is positioned in one corner on the top of the box. From the box centre, a nylon piece of string is attached to the top of the instruments pole.

 

Different notes in music are achieved by varying the angle of the pole. If you move your fingers depressing the string while moving the poles angle, the sound is changed and is emitted through the hole in the front of the box.

 

The Cello - musical instruments of Mexico

 

This stringed instrument is part of the violin family and is also known as the violoncello. However, the cello is much larger than the standard violin, and unlike the violin, this particular instrument is played in an upright position. Players of this instrument position the instrument between their legs resting on a metal spike. The player then draws his or her bow horizontally across the musical instruments strings.

This instrument produces an excellent authentic sound. These instruments are perfect for carnivals. They are made from cow horn and small gourd.

Although these instruments are found in Mexico, they actually originate from Africa. They are handcrafted drums and are much like the African slit drums. They have a very powerful haunting and unique sound when played. Originally designed from discarded gallon oil drums, these drums originate from Trinidad and were first found in the early 1940s. This musical instrument has become popular throughout the Caribbean islands as well as Mexico. All forms of sounds can be imitated with this drum. Many other musical instruments can be emulated once the playing of this musical instrument has been mastered.

Depreciation Of Musical Instruments

Over time, many items depreciate in value. You go out and buy a brand new car, a few years later you come to sell that same car. To your horror, you find out that the very same car is only worth a fraction of the cost you paid for. This is true for many items is a fact of life that many people need to come to terms with, especially if they are buying items and expecting to make money on them, or, sell them on for the price they paid in years to come.

You go out and buy a household computer, a few years later you come to learn that the same computer is worth nothing compared to what you first paid for it. This is the same across a whole range of items in the technology field.

There are exceptions to the above however; some can be based on market share, business proposals, how well a certain market is doing and so on. If you look at the housing market, the value of houses in developed countries such as America and England are going up in value. So if you buy a house, potentially you will make money. Years down the road the house will be worth more than what you originally paid for it. This is the opposite of Depreciation.

Another exception to items going down value is musical instruments. The Depreciation doesn’t really happen. Such items don’t go down in value. If someone has an old musical instrument in rare form, it could be worth thousands. For example, you could auction the musical instrument and it could very well go for much more than you expected, therefore the musical instrument has not depreciated in value.
