The wind instruments can be put in to two main categories, which are brass instruments and woodwind instruments. We have found out that brass instruments were generally made with brass and the woodwind instruments were mainly made with wood. However, this is not always a concrete guide when deciding on the family type of the instrument. A better way to find out which family the instrument belongs to is to hear the actual sound the musical instrument plays.

In brass instruments, the lips vibrate of the person playing the instrument, thus, causing the air within the instrument to vibrate. In woodwind instruments, the musical player normally causes a reed to vibrate, which affects the air within the tube, or the player will blow against the edge of an open hole covering other holes up to change notes. This is typical in the case of the flute.
We have found out that the saxophone and the flute are now typically made from brass, however, they are all classified as woodwind instruments as this is where they originate from. A long time ago, these instruments were all designed and played as wood instruments, typically using cane.
The serpent musical instrument however, is made from wood, or in some cases, plastic tubing. However, these instruments belong to the brass family of instruments because the vibrating is done by the player’s lips.
